...and Air Transport News chooses .aero

The recently launched Air Transport News - a daily e-mail and online newsletter produced in English by 11Aviation Publications, a specialist aviation publisher based in Athens, Greece - is affirming its industry credentials by using the .aero domain.

The newsletter (which can be found at www.airtransportnews.aero) provides a growing body of news and analysis, as well as a calendar of events, book reviews and industry-related jobs.

Adding real benefit to the .aero domain

An important part of the work of the .aero team is to help the industry explore and understand some of the innovative thinking that is a continuing feature of the Internet community.

For example, in October last year, .aero chaired a session at the US-based Air Transport Association's e-business forum to discuss DNSSec, the technology that adds significant security benefits to the domain name system (DNS).

"There are many myths and untruths about aviation's impact on the environment.

Meet the registrars - Namesbeyond

Names Beyond is a US-based ICANN-accredited registrar offering online identity protection and domain management services. The company has systems dispersed in India, South East Asia and Canada, as well as North America. We spoke to their founder, President and CEO Uma Murali.

Q: Your company became accredited in December 2005, making you one of the most recently contracted .aero registrars. What made you decide to offer .aero?

Meet the registrars - Secura

Ever since the .aero domain was opened for business in March 2002, only members of the aviation community - including airlines, airports, aerospace companies, organizations, associations, government agencies and qualified individuals - have been able to register a .aero name.

Those registering for the first time must still obtain a Membership ID before signing up with one of the eleven registrars currently offering the service. The first of these, and still one of the domain's most active registrars, was Cologne-based Secura GmbH.

North American exchange

Once again .aero will be participating in the high-level ATA e-Business Forum, to be held this year from 17-19 October at Miami Beach, Florida.

The ATA e-Business Program focuses on the creation of standards for information exchange to support engineering, maintenance, matériel management and flight operations. Members include airlines, aerospace manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, repair agencies, software providers and consultants who jointly develop a variety of standards used to make information exchange easier and more efficient.

SITA to release 3-letter airport codes and reserved names

At the last .aero council (DAC) meeting on June 6th, it was recommended that SITA release 3-letter airport codes (location identifiers) and the currently reserved special industry and other reserved domain names for registration by eligible members of the aviation community on a first-come-first-served basis.

This is a last chance for airports to secure their 3-letter codes, which have been reserved exclusively for airport use since 2002.

Sporting magic and .aero

One of the earliest supporters of the project to provide the air transport community with its own Internet top level domain was the FAI - the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale - otherwise known as The World Air Sports Federation

Today a growing number of Federation members are enjoying the three core benefits of using the .aero suffix. First, it immediately identifies an aviation industry focus and increases visibility, particularly when set against the "noise" generated by 30 million .com and .org domains.

Spreading the word across North America...

Through June and July, the .aero domain is featuring on the home page of PartsBase.com, the world's largest on-line aviation market place. With a bias towards the massive North American market, the company nevertheless serves 23,000 end-users, representing some 4,500 member companies worldwide.
